REGION—Stephen M. Miller, of the law firm of Stephen M. Miller and Associates in Providence, has been named as the new Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless (RICH) Board of Directors President.

Miller, of Lincoln, will facilitate in numerous capacities representing its members and advocating policy issues on local, the state and federal levels. He will help guide the Coalition’s mission that consists of members from various government agencies and service providers.

He said while the dilemma of homelessness cannot be easily solved, Miller added that the issue must still be addressed.

“No person or family should wonder where they are staying,” said Miller, who has practiced law in Rhode Island for more than three decades. “This is especially true for children, who need the support of a stable environment. We think of giving during the holidays, but homelessness continues to be a year-round problem.”

The Providence-based real estate attorney started his one-year term at RICH in late October. He most recently served in the same capacity at The House of Hope CDC in Warwick. During his tenure, Miller’s biggest accomplishments included overseeing the executive leadership change and successfully assisted on the repayment of the back taxes to the city. Miller said his experience in dealing such issues and the stigma associated with homelessness in the state makes his new opportunity both challenging and potentially rewarding

“There are so many people and places statewide wrestling with this topic. We should create more awareness to address this situation. The Coalition is in place to help, but the group needs to do better at conveying our goals and mission,” said Miller.

In addition to his Providence-based law practice, Miller also presides as an Associate

Municipal Court Judge in Lincoln. He has been recognized for his dedication to service. Miller received the RICOH “Homeless Legal Clinic Award” in 2011, speaks for the RI Bar Association Foreclosure Prevention and Guardianship and works as a RI Superior Court Settlement Week Mediator.

Based in Pawtucket, RI, The Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless highlights the issue of homelessness, increases public awareness, and heightens public involvement in order to solve the problem of homelessness in Rhode Island. This is done through community outreach and engagement, public policy systems change, advocacy, strategic communications and public relations, data collection and analysis, and selected direct services.
